It is hard to bring a new dimension to a show as well known at the Rodger's and Hammerstein classic, but in Mark McAndrew's production there are performances which shine threough.
Kathie Walshaw, a former Maria in previous productions, sweeps in with great presence as the Mother Abbess, relinquishing the lead role to Gillian Best.
And Gail Mason is a charming anf confident Liesl for her duets with Phil Mezzo as Rolf.
But the show stealers, of course , are the children, winning hearts with song and dance routines.
The cast sailed through a series of first night technical problems, not least of which being the voice of anyone upstage getting lost behind the orchestra.
But they found a sell out audience, prepared to join in and become a Carlsberg Festival audience, and to boo the Nazi's, an asset. Tickets have sold out for the rest of the week long run.
