1983 Cinderella

Cinderella programmeJUST right to get you into the spirit of Christmas is Vane Tempest Amateur Operatic Society's pantomime "Cinderella." Young and old have got together for an enthusiastic performance. At last night's opening performance in the Vane Tempest Welfare Hall, Seaham, youngsters' audience participation was an important part of the show. Adults admired the beautiful costumes — especially for the ballroom sequence — made by Chris Ward, of Sunderland, and at the glittering silver coach, made by Graham Chaytor. With songs, ranging from those of Gene Kelly to the Everly Brothers, the junior members showed there's a promising future for amateur operatics in Seaham. Gillian Wilson (Cinderella) and Janet Dodds (Prince Charming) make an enchanting couple, with well judged performances. Hector Gray, as Buttons, immediately had the youngsters on his side and ready to join in. There is romance and glamour, but some of the best comedy comes from ugly sisters Ann Hall and Derek Cooke with slapstick performances that delighted the audience. Stephanie Nicholson is a suitably scheming Dandini, and fairy godmother Lisa Chaytor provides the links to hold the show together. Bill Nicholson, Betty Mileham, Diane Brewster, and Wilf Gray all add to the fun in their roles. Singing and dancing was imaginative but special favourites were the junior dance group with their well-rehearsed routines. Mark McAndrew's production makes an enjoyable evening, and if you don't come out singing there's something wrong. The show continues tonight, tomorrow, and Thursday.
